The image of the saint with his pilgrim's staff and shell bear witness to his pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostela. His popularity was due to protection offered from the plague, one of the most widespread diseases after the crusades. Legend has it that on his way through the nearby town of Virgoletta, San Rocco stopped and foundeda church there. However, historical documents do not mention the presence of any religious buildings in this area, dispite its location on the Via Francigena, one of the main roads included in the itineraries of the medieval pilgrimages. The architectual characteristics of the church date back to the fifteenth centuary, and it still conserves the lintel over the portal inscribed with the date May 7, 1489.
